Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue which lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. This can lead to various symptoms including pain, irregular periods, subfertility, fatigue, mood changes. Below are a few tips on what to eat if you have endometriosis.

What to eat:
Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition thus eating an anti-inflammatory style diet may help. The Mediterranean Diet is high in foods which reduce inflammation including fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds. These foods are high in antioxidants, fibre and healthy fats which can all help reduce inflammation and support good gut health.

What to limit:
A typical “Western” diet such as that commonly eaten in Australia contains foods which can contribute to chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation can exacerbate inflammatory conditions such as endometriosis. Foods that can increase inflammation include those high in saturated and trans fats as well as refined carbohydrates e.g. processed meats, biscuits, pastries, chips, cakes, ice cream, lollies. These foods don’t need to be avoided completely but reducing your intake through choosing mostly whole, unprocessed foods can assist with reducing inflammation.

Endo and IBS:
Many women with endometriosis have altered bowel habits and may even be diagnosed with IBS. The low FODMAP diet may help with reducing IBS symptoms. However, this diet is restrictive and should be done under guidance of an Accredited Practising Dietitian to avoid nutrient deficiencies.
