April Falls Introduction

Share

April Falls signifies a month of better balance for falls prevention! It is an annual campaign promoted by NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network that aims to educate individuals on the importance of physical activity for reducing falls (NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network, 2022).

This is such a significant month as 30% of adults aged 65 or over have a fall each year (NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network, 2022). Consequently, 37% of all injury-related deaths are caused by falls (NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network, 2022). Therefore, as we continue to age, staying active and engaging in regular physical activity is vital for improving both our physical and mental wellbeing. In relation, regular exercise is associated with a 23% reduction in falls (NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network, 2022)” which will also reduce one’s risk of bone fractures and breaks.

You may now be wondering what type of exercise is most effective for reducing ones falls risk? We will delve deeper into this in the following weeks to come, however beginning with engaging in 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise on 5 or more days per week is a great way to start (NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network, 2022). If you are new to exercising, beginning with small bouts and slowly progressing to 30 minutes is also beneficial as every bit of exercise matters. Finally, consulting with an Exercise Physiologist or health professional is recommended to ensure you are receiving the best care and evidence-based exercise prescription.
