Magnesium and Sleep

Magnesium is an important mineral that supports our sleep, energy production, muscle, and blood health. Magnesium occurs naturally in many foods we eat, and is stored in our bones and muscles.

To fall asleep and stay asleep, your body needs to be in a relaxed state. Magnesium helps us to fall asleep through activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the part of our bodies that tells us to rest and ‘relax’. Because of this, many people suggest taking magnesium supplements to support better sleep health. However, research suggests that the benefits of magnesium supplementation on sleep are limited.

Regardless, incorporating high magnesium foods into your diet can support good health overall, and be supportive of improved sleep, when incorporated into a healthy, balanced diet. Foods high in magnesium include dark green leafy vegetables, nuts (especially walnuts), and whole grains. It is best to get magnesium from foods, because some magnesium supplements are extremely difficult to absorb and act as a laxative in the body when taken.

Good sleep happens when we eat well, exercise well, drink enough fluid, and reduce stress.
